Over the course of my time contributing to ReligiousFreaks.com, I got to know a fellow blogger, Scott. You can learn more about him on his own blog, Spiritual Tramp. We decided that it would be interesting to enter into a debate on the abortion issue. He was kind enough to host the debate and to allow me to repost it on my blog as well. After quite a while, I finally took the time to do so.
We chose to begin my limiting the scope of the debate to the morality of abortion, and not the legality. We each began by independently writing an opening piece describing our position on the issue. From there, we took turns responding to each other’s arguments. You can find our debate here. This post is where readers can comment on this debate. Considering the emotions attached to this issue, please keep the conversation civil. Blatant attempts at flaming will be removed.

We need…. scratch that, I need to get my response up.
That’s the nice thing about internet debates; they’ll wait. Take your time, our text isn’t going anywhere.
Done.
I am sitting here reading your guys’ debate over abortion and although I find it compelling I can’t stop and try to take a side. Abortion is such a harsh topic for anyone to partake in and the fact that you have decided to debate the morality of it makes even more so but that is just a comment.
The reason I can’t take a side is because of the completely different way I view this debate, to me it is not about morality but if I were to explain myself I would be going off of your beaten path and bringing in the realm that you did not want to bring into the debate, politics. The way I have made the decision on the topic is based solely out of my fundamental political philosophy.
I think I avoid assigning morality to it because I don’t want to try and be the decider on this topic. I am enjoying the debate and I hope that the logical conversation (so much better than the mud slinging rhetoric the extreme activist take part in) will help me draw my own conclusion.
At the risk of sharing something intensly private I have to say I want to lean towards Sid’s end of the most polite debate I’ve read in awhile. When you are there in the moment and have to make that choice, it’s how YOU feel at the time. I personally feel that if you are going to decide to have an abortion. You have a resposibility to do it early and quickly. Waiting until you are 5 6 7 months along is cruel. by then you can feel a life move inside you. If you know you can’t keep this thing inside you, decide that before the brain develops. Before suffering can even be percived. That’s only my opinion however it isn’t anywhere near a fact.
Thanks for the feedback guys! Santini, though I can’t speak for Sid I think he’d agree that any input you have is welcome. I also hope that we get to the political/legal end. Of course I have a feeling that we might see more eye to eye given my more “liberal” politics.
Pharoah, thanks for sharing.
