Math, as cool as it is, is really practically only a tool for scientists. It’s like comparing apples and oranges. Physics, chemistry, etc… actually are the study of something, in which they use the tool that is math to help describe their observations. Math is not really the study of anything. I think that is what makes math so distinctively interesting.
“Math, as cool as it is, is really practically only a tool for scientists.” Indeed it is a tool for science and other disciplines as well. But mathematics is the study of something. It is the study of logic.
Snurp,
You like metaphysics, eh? I’ve heard there’s been a resurgence of interest in that area of philosophy recently, especially in Australia. I find metaphysics interesting, even fun, but ultimately useless.
Actually, I spend my time in the history of philosophy generally, and don’t specify too much. But I mean, c’mon, metaphysics is meta. What else do you want?
Also, shouldn’t we put logic ahead of mathematics? Logician is a job, after all. But then after that we might have to put epistemology, since we have to know how we come about to using logic and how effective it is. But to do that we have to know what it is we have knowledge about, so…metaphysics wins again!
Dude,

Chop
Bah! You mathematicians and your fancy theorems. Metaphysics is where it’s at!
As an Economist, I can’t critize any other field of study because the only time we get something right is when we study things that already happened!
Hey Chop,

Santini,
Not to mention you guys never seem to agree.
I’ll give you that Sid. Math is a study of itself. Which is a type of logic. But it, in and of itself is not a holistic study of logic.
Actually, I spend my time in the history of philosophy generally, and don’t specify too much. But I mean, c’mon, metaphysics is meta. What else do you want?
